HOME LEARNING BEGINS TOMORROW

Posted: April 5, 2020

"Welcome back" Tommies!

Tomorrow, along with your teachers, you will begin to explore the new world of Home Learning. The focus of this week is really about the how—making sure that you can connect with your teachers and use the various platforms that teachers are using. Once we have that established, we’ll begin to transition more to the what.

To begin this process teachers will be reaching out by telephone to assigned students beginning tomorrow, Monday April 6. These calls will help us understand what each student’s individual needs, circumstances and challenges are. The calls will also help us keep you informed of learning opportunities and give you a chance to raise any general concerns or issues you may be encountering.

Teachers may not have all the answers but will be working with school administration to help students and parents get the information they need. In the event that you do not receive a phone call by Tuesday evening, please reach out to your period one teacher by email (all staff emails are listed on the JMH website) as we may not have the correct telephone contact information for you.

Teachers will also begin sharing information and/or learning opportunities on Monday, April 6th. A complete list of teachers and the platforms they are using will be posted on the JMH website ( jmh.nbed.nb.ca )under the Documents section.

Something will be available for each of the courses you were registered in this semester. If you need help with accessing information or materials for any of your courses, you can email that teacher for assistance.

Mental wellness and family connectedness takes precedence during these times. At-home learning is going to be all about balance and we do not want you to feel overwhelmed. We understand that many of you are working as essential workers, some of you may be helping with younger siblings, some have limited access to technology…whatever your challenges are, we will work to help you through them.

Grades 9-10
Home learning options to support literacy, numeracy, science, social studies and personal skill development outcomes will be available online to families. Families will be encouraged to have children participate in these options for a minimum of 2.5 hours per day (12.5 hours per week). Learners are encouraged to participate in a daily minimum of 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of physical activity.

Grades 11-12
Education content will focus on core courses to meet high school requirements. Families will be encouraged to have children participate in these options for a minimum of 2.5 hours per day (12.5 hours per week). Learners are encouraged to participate in a daily minimum of 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of physical activity.

Potential Graduates:
All Grade 12 students who had at least 12 credits at the end of first semester, January 2020 and were on track to graduate in June 2020, will do so on time and will receive a New Brunswick high school diploma. Transcripts will indicate the student was “enrolled,” in current semester courses. These second semester courses will all count towards the required number of courses for graduation.

These are challenging time and, unfortunately, we do not currently have all the answers. We are very much approaching this as a team and working together to meet your needs. Please be patient as we do our best to support you.

If you have questions, you may email your teacher, JMH administration or leave a message on the school’s main phone line 778-6078, as messages will be checked on a regular basis by our administrative assistant.
