Since 2009 Mr. Theriault’s World Issues class have been working closely with a Montreal based organization called Sopar. Through Sopar, school’s or classrooms can raise money, learn about the needs/lack of water in other areas of the world (in this case India) and build wells, furnish classrooms, and sponsor students.
To date the World Issues class has built 6 wells providing water to over 1200 people over the next 10 years that would not have otherwise had access to, or would have had to walk on average over 6 miles to get to. They have also built 4 private washrooms for women as they do often do not have privacy, and this past year sent 14 students to school by paying their tuition costs.
This past Spring, the founder of Sopar, Angele Gingras, along with some women who are in charge of the programs on the ground in Andhra Pradesh, India, visited James M. Hill to speak with students from World Issues class, the Interact group, and the WRED group who write articles for www.worldreality.org, an official Sopar partner.
The latest well to be built in James M. Hill’s name has been constructed outside of a school and is providing water to 450 people
