Reflecting on Lost Youth

On Tuesday October 13th the Worksafe NB Lost Youth tour paid a visit to James M. Hill to discuss the prevention and aftermath of injury in the workplace through voice and video.      It all began with District 16’s Director of Education Richard Walsh giving a few words to the crowd of grade eleven and twelve students, attending from schools across the District. One thing that certainly caught the ears of all was that last year in the Province of New Brunswick a staggering 834 people between the ages of 15-24 lost time during work, due to injury in the workplace. After this shocking statistic was told, a vividly gruesome video was then presented which reflected and gave insight into the lives of three teenagers who suffered horrific injuries caused by carelessness and improper training in the workplace.   After the screening of the video, a fleck of light humor was lingering around many of the students; but when accident survivor Nick Perry came out onto the stage and asked “what’s so funny?” the auditorium was drenched with silence. Nick, when he was 19, received a job at a lumberyard in Victoria, BC, and after merely six months of work, 42 loose sheets of lumber, which weighed 1,200 kilograms, toppled over and crushed him. The aftermath of that accident left him partially paralyzed, and with many doubting his ability to ever walk again, he trained intensely, determined to prove them wrong. About a year later, with the help of braces built around his legs, he was successful. Many students listened and were enlightened by what they had seen during the presentation. The fact that they, even as students, they have as many rights in workplace as any schooled or specially trained employee, and that it is the job of the employer as well as your own to see to your personal safety. When David Hawkyard was asked his thoughts on the presentation as a whole he replied “It made me realize how many people get into sticky situations at work because of improper training, and for every accident that happened in the video it seemed like it could have been easily prevented”.
