Mi'kmaq story teller and singer came to James M. Hill on September 28th to speak on Orange Shirt Day. Augustine spoke to students about the history and customs of the Mi'kmaq people, as well as different types of medicine and healers they have used for ages. To finish the presentation she sang a song of Mi'kmaq culture and asked students and staff to sing along with her. Donna Augustine is a Mi'kmaq traditional elder whose spirt name is Thunderbird Turtle woman.

On monday Oct 1st 2018, JMH participated in blue shirt day in support of preventing bullying. Everyone came to school wearing their blue as a sign they support preventing bullying. Blue shirt day takes place on the first monday of October each year, its also known as World Day of Bullying Prevention and kicks of National Bullying Prevention month. Everyone around the world wears blues shirts to represent bullying prevention suchas cyberbullying, cruelty, rasism and homophobia.

The first meeting for the 2020 trip to Africa was held in Mr. Theriault’s room Tuesday. The trip is for students in grades 9, 10 and 11. The group will be heading to Rwanda for late February to early March 2020, and will be participating in various activities there, such as meeting with an Interact group in Rwanda, visiting a genocide memorial and going on a safari. WRED will be involved in fundraising for the trip, and Interact likely will be as well.

 On Monday October 1st, Blue shirts roamed the hallways throughout James M Hill Memorial High School. Mostly everyone was wearing blue to help raise awareness of bullying prevention. The leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying prevention organization created blue shirt day to signify the importance of national bullying prevention awareness month each October, and this year, James M Hill went out of the way to make this one special!

From October 9th to the 12th, JMH will be promoting mental health awareness. Throughout the week there will be different events and activities going on. On Tuesday, there is going to be a Mental Health Quiz. Tuesday is also Picture Day so make sure to look your best! On Wednesday, at 11:45 am, there will be a Mental Health Walk. This should be a calming and relaxing way to spend your lunch. On Thursday, there will be a Wellness Fair at Study Block which will just be a fun way to get everybody together.

On Friday, September 28th the Tommie community participated in orange shirt day in memory of all children who were sent to residential schools.  Guest speaker Donna Augustine came to share her grandfather’s experience with residential schools to help spread awareness.  She also taught us about her culture by showing us their sacred medicines and by singing a song.

The cross country team is getting ready for another year at regionals. Madame Plourde and Mrs. Underhill the two coaches of the James m hill cross country team are doing everything they can to train the team for the upcoming event taking place on Saturday October 13th in Bathurst. Grades 9s and 10s run 4 kilometers and grades 11s and 12s run 6 kilometers.
