Eng 112 - Complete questions for Act 2, scenes 3, 4 for tomorrow. Act 2 test is Thursday! Eng 111 - Today we began work on Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. We covered part one today. Please complete all questions for Part one using specific quoted lines from the poem that back up your answer. Cite using MLA format (Part followed by the lines quoted see below for an example. Part I1. To whom does the Mariner tell his story? The Mariner tells his story to one of three men on his way to a wedding. "he stoppeth one of three" (I.2)"The bridegroom's doors are opened wide,  And I am next of kin;" (I.5-6)

Eng 112 - Finish Act 1, scene 4 questions. Act 1 test is Wednesday. Eng 111 - After reading through Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, answer the following in reflection form (dash notes turns to paragraphs): What sacrifices must a person make to be a poet, artist, scientist, or scholar? We all have emotional needs. Can we really make these sacrifices? What happens when we fail? Each of us lives partly in a world of make-believe, much of it inherited from our families and our cultures. What happens when it is challenged and/or we choose to discard it?

Eng 112 - Today we began the introductory work on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Eng 111 - Students worked on their assignment sheet for Keat's Ode to a Grecian Urn and To Autumn. This is to be passed in tomorrow. Here it is for those of you not in class today (copies of the poems can be found online for people without their textbooks): The Ode – Lyric Poetry An ode is a lyric poem full of noble feeling expressed with dignity and addressed to some person or thing. “To Autumn” – John Keats pg. 312 Give examples of each kind of sense imagery in “To Autumn”. a) What kind of sense imagery is dominant in each stanza? b) What time of the season is presented in each stanza? What is autmmn personified as in stanza two? What attitude is the poet expressing about change and passing beauty?  Study Questions for "Ode on a Grecian Urn" pg. 310 1) What is an "unravished bride"? Why does Keats use this metaphor to describe the urn?2) Keats calls the urn a "historian." What "stories" does the urn seem to tell? To answer this, make a list of the pictures or objects Keats sees on the urn. How is each described? 3) What does Keats say about music in stanza two? 4) What does Keats say about love in stanza two? 5) How are the passages about music and love related to each other?6) Keats contrasts two kinds of love in stanza three (the word "more" appears twice in line 25 to develop the contrast). Explain the contrast.7) Why does Keats refer to the urn as a "Cold Pastoral"? 8) The urn is a work of art. What, finally, do you think Keats is saying about the world of art and imagination? Is it better than the "real world"? Why or why not?

Eng 112 - Social Commentary Music Assignment Due MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11th to pass in (draft, a copy of the lyrics, good copy with a works cited page):   A two page (minimum) personal response written in MLA format to a song of your choosing (it must have a social commentary vibe and be class appropriate). Your response should be written in essay form and address all or more of the following questions:   - What is significant about the title? (how does it go with the song? Offer an alternative title) - Why did you pick this example? - What is the message the author is trying to get across to the audience? (the message) - What words or phrases create vivid imagery and feeling in the audience? (the audience is you) - Choose specific lyrics, break them down, paraphrase what they are saying in your own words. - Write a brief music review of why the song is important in our world and why it is important to you! Describe why it is a superb lyrical composition and worthy of a spot in our iTunes library.   THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE SOMETHING POETIC. CHOOSE WISELY. KEEP IT CLASS APPROPRIATE. *If you work individually, you pass the assignment in. If you have a partner (approved by me) you will PRESENT your music project to the class.   Eng 111 - Your assignment: Due Monday - You are to write your own ode of no less than 30 lines of verse. - It must have a rhyme scheme, slant rhyme is fine. - Rhythm optional, but what would Mr. Martin want? - Review the main definition and criteria for odes and be sure to follow it. * To get you started, give yourself some pre-write time. Think of 6 different topics and write them down:           2 of a person (or family, profession etc.)                                     2 of an inanimate object                                     2 of a natural creature (or supernatural) use imagery, figurative language and a “dignified” style. Parodies ARE acceptable as long as they follow the criteria of an Ode. You will be graded on - form and format (length, stanza division, rhyme scheme and rhythm (if applicable). - content, figurative language and use of literary device (alliteration, consonance, metaphor etc.) - Overall style, work ethic and presentation. This is an individual assignment.

Broadcast Journalism 120 - Video announcement training began today. Students should be producing daily announcements by Thursday of this week. Eng 112 - Your examples of social commentary for your music project should be picked and started by now. This project is due on Friday, Feb. 8th. Eng 111 - This week students have been working on several different examples of lyric poetry. Today in class they explored the mysteries of the Italian sonnet. As a creative extension, students are to pass in their own piece of writing either in the format of an Elizabethan or Italian sonnet. Review the format and follow the guidelines of lyric poetry.

Digital Tech 120 - Final stop motion projects are due, finalized and submitted - tomorrow. Any work outstanding is also due by the end of the day, Monday, January 21st. Eng 112 - Dramatic poetry was finished today with Browning's My Last Duchess and Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man. The exam review sheet is attached. Remember: your English 112/111 exam is at 8:30am on Monday, January 21st.

Eng 112 - Today we wrapped up final thoughts, questions on Rime of the Ancient Mariner and began exploring the intricacies of dramatic poetry. We began with Browning's My Last Duchess. Exam review sheets will be handed out tomorrow. Eng 111 - Unit projects are due tomorrow.

Eng 112 - Today we continued with Rime of the Ancient Mariner. You are to finish questions (see yesterday's post for uploaded files) on parts 3 and 4 for tomorrow. Same directions as yesterday. Eng 111 - Reminder of the due date on short story unit projects is Wednesday, Jan. 16th. Written proposals are due tomorrow.

Digital Tech - Those who have not submitted their one-minute video, must have that in to me by TOMORROW in order for us to begin our final project on Friday. Your final project is below, we officially begin it tomorrow, it is due on Jan. 18th.     Assignment - Stopmotion   Create a 30 second Stopmotion video. Within the video, you must make use of Photoshop as well. This can be in the form of a title sequence or anywhere else where it fits. The project must tell a complete story and must contain a beginning middle and end.  Add audio that helps set the mood and tell your story. You will be evaluated on pre-planning (storyboarding, shot sequencing) and the overall project.   Eng 112 - Today in class we read the first two parts of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Answer the questions for parts one and two on the attached sheet (remember to quote directly from the poem with a brief reference to part and line number in the responding to your questions). There are file copies attached for your convenience.   Eng 111 - Today students began work on their Short Fiction Unit Project. Your project proposal must be passed in on Friday and should outline specific components to your project and how you will get to those upper levels of Bloom's critical thinking. short_story_unit_project.doc
