Physics 112: Standing Waves in 3D (Helioseismology)

This page contains simulations of 3D standing waves of our Sun.  The vibrations are exagerated but that is how the surface of the Sun "wiggles" because of pressure waves (sound waves) traveling through it.

Physics 112: Wave Interference

Play with the values to see the different wave forms (speed, wavelength, frequency, etc).  The interference examples shown in class are below: Standing Wave f(x,t) = 2.5*sin(2.0*x + 8.0*t) g(x,t) = 2.5*sin(2.0*x - 8.0*t) Beat f(x,t) = 3.5*sin(8.5*x - 25.0*t) g(x,t) = 2.5*sin(9.5*x - 5.0*t) Walking Waves f(x,t) = 4.0*sin(8.0*x - 10.0*t) g(x,t) = 2.0*sin(10.5*x + 10.0*t)

Physics 112: Standing Waves Through a Baseball Bat

Hit the ball were there is no motion for optimum power.  Hit the bat on a part oscillating and prepare to have sore hands or a broken bat!
Physics 112 Discussed standing waves in 1, 2, and 3D.  Our main focus will be standing waves in 1D (along a string). Check out the links (see Web Links) for wave interference and standing waves simulations and videos. Test moved to Wednesday, Sept. 29 Physics 122 Newton's second law.  Read Pg 154 - 167.  Questions Pg 163 #1 - 3 and Pg 168 #4 - 8. Handout Problems (not downloadable) Monday will be review.  All questions should be completed so that you know what you need help with. Test Tuesday, Sept 28. Comp Sci 110 Review notes for chapter 1 and 2. Chapter 2 quiz is Friday. Ensure first three assignments are completed and submitted.
