Welcome back!  Here's what we tackled today: English 9 - We reviewed our course outline for semester two, tentatively chose a novel to study (The Outsiders or The Catcher in the Rye), and began a little pre-reading activity (attached to this post).  Tomorrow, we'll finish it, then work on establishing the setting of your novels.   English 121 - We  reviewed our course outlines, then worked through understnding the levels of Bloom's Taxonomy for Thinking (attached to this post).  Tomorrow, we will complete the Bloom's activity with the very short story, The China Doll. Don't forget about your REFLECTION, due on Friday.

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Good day!  In class, we scored then edited the essays you wrote waaaaaaaay back in September.  You've come a long way, baby!  We then began a 15-question mock Writing I, to prepare you for what you might see on the ELPA.  Oh, that's another thing: the Reading component of the ELPA has been postponed until a later date, so you will just have regular classes on Thursday.  Your schedule for Friday will remain the same, and you will complete all three Writing components.  You should also be studying for any exams that you may have next week.

Good day!  We examined another practice piece for the ELPA today (a pretty long poem!), and worked on our reading strategies.  Also, we completed some of the grammatical exercises that you'll have to tackle.  Tomorrow, it's another practice piece...and yes, it's a poem!  You're welcome!

You handed in your homework today....well, most of you did...then we completed and reviewed the ELPA sample.  Remember, take your time, use process of elimination, and always refer back to the text when you're given a line reference (read a little above and a little below, too).  Tomorrow, we'll work on another sample.

Good day!  In class today, we completed and reviewed the common (difficult) terms page together, then began a practice piece for the ELPA.  We will finish it in class tomorrow.  Also, YOU WERE GIVEN A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT, due tomorrow (it is attached to this post).  It is a review of the elements of short stories.  Please complete it, as it counts for marks.  Have a great night!

Today we almost completed a little "Walk and Talk" activity, using several important terms that may appear on the ELPA.  Students were assigned one or two terms, then were responsible to teach their understanding of those terms to their peers.  We will take about ten minutes of tomorrow's class time to complete all terms, then attack a practice assessment piece.  Expect homework tomorrow night!

In class today, we reviewed the new short story elements covered yesterday (including the four types of point of view) and added another: unreliable narrator.  As an example, we began reading The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (cree-py!!!), while employing the "Stop and Write Something" strategy.  We'll finish it up tomorrow.  Have a great evening!

In class today, we were fortunate to have a Boomerang mentor or two work through an activity on Building Strong Relationships.  Afterward, you continued reading The Monkey's Paw using the "Stop and Write Anything" strategy.  No homework for tonight, as we'll finish the story and questions in class tomorrow.

In class today, we began (and many completed) the mock assessment re-write from September.  Tomorrow, we'll finish up, enter your responses into Senteo, and have a little comparison session.  Great work!  No homework tonight.

In class today, we discussed the elements involved in a good plot and completed four questions based on Fredric Brown's short story, The Hobbyist.  Next, we will read W.W. Jacobs' classic, The Monkey's Paw, and apply some reading strategies as we go.

Good day!  In class today, we enjoyed a little SSR, then reviewed the Sentry and Voodoo responses you completed last night, keeping Bloom's Taxonomy for Thinking in mind.  We then began a list of the short story terms you will need to know, including introduction, protagonist, antagonist, and plot, for starters.  There is no homework for tomorrow.  Enjoy your evening!

Today, we completed our discussion of the continnuum items for Sentry.  We then evaluated the thinking level for the assigned questions and got to work!  For tomorrow, please complete the questions (in as much detail as you can) for both Sentry and Voodoo.  We'll check and correct them tomorrow.

In periods one and two, you had a little time to correct your peers' responses to your INCREDIBLE Bloom's Taxonomy-based questions, you enjoyed a little silent reading, then we discussed a few items on our Sentry continuum.  No homework for the weekend.   Period six students, you are responsible for answering your peer Bloom's Taxonomy questions for Monday, when you'll have a little time to correct them, and we'll continue with our discussion of the Sentry continuum items.   Have a great weekend!

Welcome to December!  Today we enjoyed some SSR, took a little time to review what we learned about Bloom's Taxonomy for Thinking, then you were given an assignment that will hit the APPLICATION level.  Using "The China Doll," you are to create questions that address particular levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.   You will have tomorrow to work at it, and the assignment is due on Thursday.  Good luck!
