You found out your marks today (insert threatening theme music here).  Also, we reviewed yesterday's poetry quiz to ensure that you know how to best answer short answer questions of this nature (and to ensure your better understanding of the poems on the test).  Your homework for tomorrow is to complete the analysis page for "The Man Who Finds That His Son Has Become A Thief".  Do your best!

We wrote another quiz today, based on two fairly basic poems, and we added "theme" to our master list of poetic terms we need to know.  You should REALLY be studying that list, right?  Some of your quiz scores aren't exactly where they should be... No homework for tonight.  Get some rest!

Hello!  In class today, we did a little peer editing of your paragraphs (then decided to either hand them in or fix them up a little more for tomorrow).  We also reviewed the new terms from yesterday and added imagery to our master list.  REMEMBER YOUR TEST TOMORROW!  We're looking for "A" performances, right?  DEFINITELY possible!

Hey there!  Today in class we reviewed the poetic terms from yesterday and added a few more (stanzas and the purposes of stanza breaks, onomatopoeia, narrative poetry, and assonance (AKA vowel rhyme).  We listened to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and worked through the lyrics of "Lose Yourself" (we'll listen to that one tomorrow). HOMEWORK FOR TOMORROW:  You are to write TWO terrific paragraphs (narrative, descriptive or explanatory/expository) for tomorrow, and edit them using the rubric we made up in class.  The assignment sheet is attached to this note. NOTE:  You will have a Senteo test on Friday to cover the poetry terms (figurative language) we have learned so far.

We covered a few new terms today (allusion, diction and parallel structure), and used a couple of songs to reinforce them.  No homework for tomorrow...unless you didn't hand in your paragraph assignment (and were assigned Homework Lunch for tomorrow). Remember that you have a presentation to attend tomorrow to learn more about your big, juicy brains!

Hey there!  BIG day today!  We reviewed/relearned what makes a great paragraph (topic sentence for focus, lots of supporting sentences with transitions - you were given a reference page full of these!- and loads of detail), and a concluding sentence.  We then created a class rubric to use for your rewrite of two out of the three paragraphs you wrote about the "Dangerous Waters" packet you worked with last Thursday and Friday.  It deals with Focus on Topic, Transitions, and Word Choice, and it attached to this note. For tomorrow, please use everything we covered today and re-write two of your paragraphs.  Score YOUR opinion on your rubric, too.  Good luck!

Today, we came up with great examples (standards) to use for answering any short-answer questions for me this year.  Remember, being done first very rarely means being done best.  Answer every part of the question to your absolute best ability.  We also made some closing remarks on "The Geranium" by Theodore Roethke, added speaker, parallelism and inference to our master list of terms, and used "She Talks To Angels" to help us out. Be terrific on Thursday and Friday!

Hello!  You did a great job with your metaphors last night!  Thank you!  Today, we added simile, hyperbole, free verse, verse, alliteration and personification to our list of figurative language and poetry terms.  We also reviewed five easy steps to better understanding a poem (it's attached to this note) - M-P-W-LL-F, and started the very beginnings of The Geranium by Theodore Roethke. Have a terrific long weekend...and come back ready to tackle some more songs and poems!

English 9 - Today, you handed in the final, FINAL draft of your friendly letter.  Great job!  Also, we began another KWL based on the topic of hockey gear.  Remember, we're engaging your prior knowledge, but we're also working on employing reading strategies DURING and AFTER reading, too.
