Mrs. MacDonald Notes

Economics 120, English 113, Language Arts 9, English 111

Notes

Continuing on from our analysis of the SPJ Code of Ethics, let's create our own, for our purposes in a Journalism Class:
  • For the section you were assigned, develop two points to add to our own class code of ethics
  • Keep in mind the products that could be generated in this class, using the photos and stories of your peers and community members (yearbook, feature stories, sports re-caps, announcements, interviews)
  • We will keep the same sections as the SPJ model, but add our own bullets on chart paper for each section.  We will be starting that in class today, and can add yours on tomorrow.  Either bring your written bullets to add tomorrow, or turn them in in the "Assignments" section of Teams.

Welcome to Wednesday, B Track English 11 Team!  Now that you each have an independent book at home with you, I would like to you to read for at least 30 minutes of the hour that is required for the week (your can certainly do many hours if you wanted to!).  I will ask you the same question as the group had yesterday, just as a "Teams"/home-learning test run:  Once you have read for at least 30 minutes, please answer this question:  In what ways is this book going to challenge you?  Please respond below (we set 4:00 pm as a loose deadline), so I know that Teams is working for you.

If you need to, you can always email me at    jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca

See you tomorrow!

Welcome to Wednesday, LA9 Track B!  As with the group from yesterday, I would just like you to spend a bit of time with your book, to make sure it is going to work for you.  Could you please just let me know in what ways your book is complex to you.  I just want to know how you think the book might challenge you a bit, with an example or two from what you read today.  Your classmates had some excellent responses above.  Hopefully you get close to an hour of reading in today.  See you all tomorrow!

If you can't access Teams, you can always email at    jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca
Happy Wednesday, B-Track Journalism group.  Here is a small assignment from today.  Please respond that you have received this; after that, just be ready for the next step in class tomorrow.   In the link below, you will find the Code of Ethics for the Society of Professional Journalism.  Today, please skim over that document - Read the preamble, the headings, and the descriptions of each heading.  Then, you will have one section assigned to you to go into with some depth, and figure out the heart of it to relay to the rest of the class tomorrow.  I will specify your particular sections in posts below.

Here is the link to get you started:      https://www.spj.org/pdf/spj-code-of-ethics.pdf

I have sent your specific sections to you on "Teams."  If you can't get on Teams, please email me, and I will let you know which section you have been assigned.

Hey there LA9 Track A Team!  Sorry for the late post - I was figuring out how to tag the groups in Teams, so you all didn't get notifications for everything.  If something has gone wrong with your 'Teams"app, you can always check here.  For your check-in today (even though it is late in the "work-day"), could you please just let me know in what ways your book is complex to you.  So, I just want to know how you think the book might challenge you a bit, with an example or two from what you read today.  Hopefully you got close to an hour of reading in today.  See you all tomorrow!

Happy Tuesday, A-Track Journalism Team!   While you all seem OK with "Teams," I will post this here, just in case you can't access Teams today.  Did you follow the election at all?  Have a look here to see the results, and think about the graphics, and the ways that the information is presented.  Are the facts more clear, represented this way?  What role might graphic art play in Journalism?   Look at the election results at this link, then respond with your thoughts on the use of graphic art:   https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/elections/new-brunswick/2020/results/

If you need to email your responses, it is   jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca     Don't forget the 2!

Any other comments about the election?

Happy Tuesday, A-Track students.  You all seemed to be doing OK with "Teams."  Just in case you can't get on there today, please respond by email to the question below.  You will need to read for a bit - remember, that an hour a week is the MINIMUM requirement, so you should read for at least 30 minutes today.

How does you book seem to meet the complexity level for Grade 11 (and for YOU!)?  Are there a few words that are new to you in each chapter?  It is laid out differently than you are used to?  Is it a topic that is new to you, or very serious and mature?  There are lots of things that make a text complex - just let me know where yours fits.  Give a few examples, if you can.

If you need to email me, it is:  jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca     Don't forget the 2!

Welcome to the last week of home learning! For the last general assignment, could you just reflect a bit on the topic of Economics?  What was the most important concept you learned in the course (such as it was!) this term?  Describe it, and provide some details on how it applies (or will apply) to your own life.

Just send it in to the Teams site, or email it - jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca

Those completing the credit, would not have to do this assignment, unless you want to!  Your assignment is posted below - it is an interview with Economist Jim Stanford, and a few reflection questions on it.

Great job with learning these concepts, everyone.  I have been impressed with your answers.

Hello everyone, your final question of the book study is posted below.  Remember that everything is due by this Friday!  I have been really impessed with the depth of your thinking throughout this book study, and the diligence so many of you have had in turning things in each week - you have done great all on your own, and will be well-prepared for Grade 10.

Hi there, everyone!

As we wind down the year here, don't forget to send in the final copies of your essays.  I have gotten a couple of good, clear explananatory essays, as well as a couple of research essays.  Everything you are planning on sending in will need to be in by next Friday, June 12th.

Let me know if you need any further supports:  jean.macdonald2@nbed.nb.ca

Hi everyone!  We are winding down the course; next week will be the last assignment.  This week's outcome assignment is a very useful one for everyone, so I suggest that everyone have a look at this one - not only those doing the credit.  While the outcomes basically covers how different financial institutions work, this is where I like to stick in a week's worth of lessons on financial literacy.  The Mint. org is a good site with some clear information.

The assignment below has some guiding questions to take you though it.

Hi there Language Arts 9!  We are winding down the year: only two more weeks to go.  This week we will think about the protagonist's goal - what is the main thing they working towards throughout this book?  WHY were they  working towards it?  The assignment posted below will take you through a few questions to guide your thinking.  remember to add detail from your book to explain your answers:

Book Study Question of the Week – June 1st!

Since the weeks are flying by, and the year is coming to an end, you should be finishing up your book, too. These last few questions are based on the understanding that you have finished, or are close to finishing. If you aren’t quite there, maybe do that first.

What was the protagonist’s main goal? What was s/he trying to accomplish? Why?

Please explain all of your answers with some detail from the book:

1. What do you believe was the protagonist’s goal? How do you know?

2. What do you believe was his/her motivation for having that goal? Explain.

3. What was the most difficult challenge or conflict that the character encountered, in attempting to reach that goal? What made it challenging?

4. DID the protagonist reach his or her goal? How do you know?

Hi everyone!  The term is quickly coming to an end, so we will start tying up the assignments you have been working on.  I know some of you have been finishing up the essays.  I have an adapted rubric posted below that you can use to perfect your final copy.  It has both the original assignment for the research paper, as well as the adapted assignment for after the school closed.  Either way, we are just going for good solid writing, so the rubric works.

We need to tie things up by June 12th, which gives you a couple of weeks.  Let me know what other supports you need.
