Eng 111 - Respond to one of your classmates' responses to Thursday's A of W. Eng 112 - Answer three of the following long answer questions. Make sure that your answers are clear, and that the spelling and grammar is correct. 1. Of course such lotteries have never existed. Therefore the story must be presenting some sort of message. For example, it might be a satire of religious rituals in modern times. Or it may be a commentary on the fragility of family loyalties. What other possibilities occur to you? Which can be best supported by evidence within the text? 2. The lottery is run by two men named Graves and Summers. What significance can you see in the choice of names? Do any other names in the story have interesting connotations? 3. Trace the changes in Tessie Hutchinson’s attitude in the course of the story. What do these changes suggest about a possible theme for the story? 4. The story is full of details about small-town life, for example, the children’s play before the lottery begins. What other details suggest a peaceful rural setting? Describe the contrast between the setting and characters and the plot.

Eng 112 - Work should be well underway for your five paragraph comparison essay on the three Poe stories we read. Comparison Essay – Edgar Allen Poe   You are to write a 5 paragraph essay on the similarities between Edgar Allen Poe’s three stories: “Tell-Tale Heart”,  “The Black Cat” and “Cask of Amontillado”.   In order to discuss how these three stories are similar, feel free to use the following suggestions: -          Use direct examples from the stories (description, plot similarities, characters etc.) -          Use direct quotations from any of the three stories -          Compare Poe’s writing style. Examples may include his use of foreshadowing, suspense, irony, atmosphere, point of view, symbolism, etc.   Evaluation: Introduction - Provide a clear thesis statement, presented in an original way. Remember: a thesis statement clearly states the  purpose of the essay. Body      -        There should be 3 separate paragraphs which compare specific elements of the two stories. Possible paragraph ideas are: -          A paragraph on plot similarities. -          A  paragraph on Poe’s writing style the types of figures of speech he uses -          A paragraph on Poe’s use of figurative language (suspense, foreshadowing, atmosphere -          A paragraph which includes contrasts (differences) can be used as well. -          you should be able to support your comparisons using quotes or direct examples from the stories. Conclusion - Give a restatement of the original purpose. It helps to mention the points covered in the body of the essay and tie up remaining loose ends. (ask yourself: have I accomplished what I had originally intended when I started writing? Have I met my objectives stated in the purpose?).

Eng 111 - Read lines 93-106 of Act 1, scene 5. In this first exchange by Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare puts it in the format of an Elizabethan sonnet - paraphrase the content and discuss why he would choose to use a poetic format. Eng 112 - Re-read the story "Cask of Amontillado" and provide a detailed plotline on the events. This is to pass in tomorrow. For help in understanding the events of the story, I've attached a pdf file of the story in comic form. Remember to base your plotline on the events of the written story, not the comic.
