Eng 111 - Argumentative/Persuasive Essay DUE: January 9th, 2012 Do you think that technology makes lives easier or harder for humans? Apply your answer to Sara Teasdale's poem and Bradbury's story. References cited in MLA format will be expected.(you may also use the articles and conversations from class)   Eng 112 - Your assignment: DUE TUESDAY TO PASS IN - You are to write your own ode of no less than 20 lines of verse. - It must have a rhyme scheme, slant rhyme is fine. - Rhythm optional, but what would Mr. Martin want? - Review the main definition and criteria for odes and be sure to follow it. * To get you started, give yourself some pre-write time. Think of 6 different topics and write them down:           2 of a person (or family, profession etc.)                         2 of an inanimate object                         2 of a natural creature (or supernatural) use imagery, figurative language and a dignified style (elevated language, no slang)

Eng 111 - Reading Focus for "Home Smart Home": Does technology make life harder or easier for humans? Answer this question in a half page response using specific evidence from the text to back up your opinion(s). Remember that we will be exploring this question tomorrow in class. Eng 112 - You are to compose an original Shakespearean sonnet of 14 lines, the given rhyme scheme and in iambic pentameter. "Did we learn all that today?" You sure did.

Eng 111 - Look over Bradbury's "A Sound of Thunder" once again. Tomorrow we will begin another of his Science-Fiction gems, "There Will Come Soft Rains". Eng 112 - We began our poetry unit yesterday. Today in class we shared creative versions of Haiku and explored the charmingly simple realm of Idyllic poetry with Marlowe's "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" and Raleigh's "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd". We laughed, we cried.

Eng 111 - post at least two replies to this weekend's posted Article of the Week. We had some great discussion in class today and we will follow up with it tomorrow. We also read Poe's The Black Cat and you were given the assignment of finding specific use of literary device. Have the story read and we will tackle that tomorrow. Eng 112 - Persuasive essays are DUE tomorrow without exception or excuse. Have your prewriting and drafts ready to hand in as well.

Eng 111 - You have been assigned a new "Article of the Week": The Middle East: a History of War and Peace. Post your responses to http://dt16community.nbed.nb.ca/blogs/martin/ and pass in your notated article. You have also been assigned the creative writing task associated with Poe's Tell Tale Heart.       Writing Activities:  Choose one of the following. 1.    Rewrite the final scene of the story from the perspective of one of the police officers.  You might wish to write the official report filed by them.  2.    Use another type of “point of view” shift to re-tell the story. 3.    Write a poem or song lyrics about the events of this story. 4.    Discuss the concept of “madness” – is the narrator really crazy? Or just a little “misunderstood”. 5. Eng 111 - Romeo and Juliet test answers should all be submitted to the website by this time. We are one week into our cross-curricular collaborative (check out that alliteration) project with Mr. O'Toole's digital tech class and Andrew Tidby. PSA scripts and storyboards should be submitted and approved by now and shooting is already underway for a few organized groups. Eng 112 - Short story unit projects have all been presented (unreal) and we will be moving onto our next unit - essay writing on Monday after Thursday's Remembrance Day ceremony. Unit tests have been passed back and reviewed.

Eng 111 - Respond to one of your classmates' responses to Thursday's A of W. Eng 112 - Answer three of the following long answer questions. Make sure that your answers are clear, and that the spelling and grammar is correct. 1. Of course such lotteries have never existed. Therefore the story must be presenting some sort of message. For example, it might be a satire of religious rituals in modern times. Or it may be a commentary on the fragility of family loyalties. What other possibilities occur to you? Which can be best supported by evidence within the text? 2. The lottery is run by two men named Graves and Summers. What significance can you see in the choice of names? Do any other names in the story have interesting connotations? 3. Trace the changes in Tessie Hutchinson’s attitude in the course of the story. What do these changes suggest about a possible theme for the story? 4. The story is full of details about small-town life, for example, the children’s play before the lottery begins. What other details suggest a peaceful rural setting? Describe the contrast between the setting and characters and the plot.
